Adenoids are lymphoid tissue located in the back of the nose.They are present at birth and then begin to enlarge. They, along with the tonsils, continue to grow until individuals are aged 5-7 years. Then, they generally regress by the age of 12-14 years , but many a times, they do not ,and cause nasal congestion, snoring, and breathing through the mouth, by physically blocking the back of the nose. Since they are located very close to the tube connecting the ear and the nose(eustachian tube), they can cause recurrent ear infections and fluid in the ear leading to hearing loss.

Adenoids can be diagnosed by a simple x ray  as shown.

Though,topical nasal steroids may shrink adenoids slightly (ie, up to 10%),but, once the topical nasal steroid is discontinued, the adenoids grow again  and continue to cause problems.

Adenoidectomy is the surgical procedure in which the adenoids are removed. Conventional Blind curette of adenoids is no longer performed, as it leads to bleeding and incomplete removal leading to recurrence.
