  TONSILLECTOMY & ADENOIDECTOMY WH

Does your child snore / sleep with mouth open?
Does your child get recurrent cold and ear infections?

Adenoids are lymphoid tissue located in the back of the nose. They are present at birth and then begin to enlarge. They, along with the tonsils, continue to grow until individuals are aged 5-7 years. Then, they generally regress by the age of 12-14 years , but many a times, they do not ,and cause nasal congestion, snoring, and breathing through the mouth, by physically blocking the back of the nose. Since they are located very close to the tube connecting the ear and the nose(eustachian tube), they can cause recurrent ear infections and fluid in the ear leading to hearing loss.

Adenoids can be diagnosed by a simple x ray  as shown.

Though, topical nasal steroids may shrink adenoids slightly (ie, up to 10%),but, once the topical nasal steroid is discontinued, the adenoids grow again  and continue to cause problems.

Adenoidectomy is the surgical procedure in which the adenoids are removed. Conventional Blind curette of adenoids is no longer performed, as it leads to bleeding and incomplete removal leading to recurrence. At Speciality ENT Hospital, we use plasma technology (coblation) under high definition endoscopic guidance for painless and bloodless removal of adenoids from the roots, ensuring no recurrence and fast recovery.

Tonsillectomy is surgery to remove the tonsils. The tonsils are glands at the back of the throat. Enlarged tonsils can cause recurrent throat infections and breathing difficulty (snoring and sleep apnea). A throat infection more than 5 times in 2 years is an indication for tonsil surgery. Severely enlarged tonsils leading to breathing difficulty is also an indication.

At Speciality ENT hospital, we use plasma (coblation) technology for bloodless and relatively painless removal of tonsils. Intracapsular tonsil surgery is performed for breathing difficulty in very small children, where only excess tonsil tissue is removed, leaving behind some tonsil tissue to function. This surgery is absolutely painless and bloodless.
